Beaches near Ainhoa

Between the mountains and the Atlantic, Ainhoa makes it easy to enjoy the beaches of the Basque coast.

From the village, it is only a short journey from the foothills of the Pyrenees to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Ciboure, Bidart or Biarritz for a few hours by the ocean.

The coast offers very different kinds of beaches: sheltered bays for calmer swimming, long stretches of sand open to the Atlantic, surf beaches and lively town beaches within walking distance of cafés and restaurants. It is easy to choose according to the mood of the day, whether you want to swim, walk along the shore, watch the surfers or simply enjoy lunch overlooking the sea.

One of the pleasures of staying in Ainhoa is this closeness between two very different landscapes: a morning hike in the hills can easily end with an afternoon on the coast.

Saint Jean de Luz – Grande Plage

In the heart of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the Grande Plage curves around a wide bay protected by three sea walls. The water is generally calmer here than on beaches directly exposed to the Atlantic, making it a lovely choice for swimming.

Just a few steps away are the harbour, Place Louis XIV, the historic town centre and plenty of cafés and restaurants. It is an ideal beach to combine with lunch or a wander through Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

Sokoa beach

Bidart – Uhabia beach

South of the village of Bidart, Uhabia is a broad sandy beach at the mouth of the river of the same name, surrounded by green hills and Basque houses.

More exposed to the Atlantic than the beaches of Saint-Jean-de-Luz bay, it has a different feel, with more waves and a landscape that is typical of this part of the Basque coast. Wide and easy to enjoy for a full day, it is a lovely place to spend time by the ocean.

Biarritz – Côte des Basques

Below the cliffs of Biarritz, the Côte des Basques is one of the most iconic stretches of coastline in the area. Known as the birthplace of surfing in Biarritz, it opens out at low tide into a long expanse of sand with wonderful views towards the mountains and the Spanish coast.

The tide matters here: as the water rises, the beach becomes much smaller and can disappear completely. It is therefore worth checking the tide times before you go, whether you are planning to swim, walk or simply watch the surfers.

Biarritz – Grande Plage

Between the Hôtel du Palais and central Biarritz, the Grande Plage is the most urban beach in this selection. Here, the Atlantic meets the elegant architecture of the town, with cafés, restaurants and shops just a few steps from the sand.

Lively in summer, it is a great choice if you want to combine a few hours on the beach with time in Biarritz itself. Out of season, it is also a beautiful place for a walk along the ocean.

From the mountains to the ocean

One of the things that makes Ainhoa special is how easily you can move from one landscape to another. In the morning, paths around the village lead through hills, woodland and pasture; a few hours later, you can be walking barefoot on the sand beside the Atlantic.

That closeness means you do not really have to choose between a mountain holiday and time by the sea. A day might begin with a hike from Ainhoa, continue with lunch in Saint-Jean-de-Luz and finish with a swim at Socoa or sunset in Biarritz.

Which beach should you chose near to Ainhoa ?

For calmer, more sheltered swimming: the Grande Plage in Saint-Jean-de-Luz or Socoa, both within the protected bay.

For a wide Atlantic beach: Uhabia in Bidart, with plenty of sand and a more open-ocean feel.

For surfing and scenery: the Côte des Basques in Biarritz, spectacular at low tide and closely tied to the history of surfing on the Basque coast.

For beach and town together: Biarritz Grande Plage, right in the centre and close to cafés, restaurants and shops.

There is no single “best beach near Ainhoa” — each offers something different, and it is easy to discover several during the same stay.

Planning a beach day

On the Basque coast, tides and ocean conditions can change a beach considerably over the course of the day. Before setting out, it is worth checking tide times as well as local information on swimming conditions.

In summer, the beaches and coastal roads are naturally busier. Going earlier in the day often means a quieter atmosphere and easier parking.

When swimming, always follow local signs, flags and lifeguard advice. Conditions on beaches open to the Atlantic can change quickly, even when the sea appears calm.

And if the weather is not ideal for the beach, the villages, markets, walking trails and mountains around Ainhoa always offer another way to explore the Basque Country.
